Taking the peace of Christ with us

Work took me out and about today, and as I was in West London, I was able to make a small detour after an appointment, to a church which I knew would be open all day. Today had been designated a day of global prayer and fasting for peace and reconciliation in the Holy Land: a day when we could come together, collectively, across differences, united in prayer and a desire for peace and justice over violence and hatred, and indiscriminate destruction of human lives. And whilst I can pray anywhere, it felt important to make this detour at midday; to spend some time praying alongside other people, in a space and a time set aside for this.

There was a sign outside the church, inviting people in for prayer and peace. As I entered, I took note of what was on the other side - the side most visible to people as they would leave. Take the Peace of Christ with you... And so I did. I brought the peace of Christ, which surpasses all other peace, into the church with me, and into my prayer... And as I left, I paused by the sign, and made it my intention to take that peace with me, to my next appointment and beyond. Because otherwise, how can I pray for Christ's peace to reign elsewhere, if it doesn't first reign in my heart, my home, my relationships...?

As we pray for peace and reconciliation in our world, let us also, consciously, take the peace of Christ with us...
