The civilisation of love will not arise from a single or spectacular gesture, but from the sum total of small and steadfast acts of fidelity that serve as a bulwark against dehumanisation. For this reason, it is worthwhile pausing to reflect on some aspects of how we, each in our own way, can cooperate in building the civilisation of love. ~ Magnifica Humanitas, 213
Yesterday we celebrated Trinity Sunday: a feast centred on a mystery, which we can only begin to understand through love. It is a feast of God, who is pure, overflowing Love; who is eternal communion, and constant, self-giving relationship. And today we began June, a month dedicated to the Sacred Heart - so, surely, a month dedicated to the source of all love! In the Heart of Jesus we see a love which is tender and strong, unlimited, universal and personal. And always, always, a Heart which invites us into intimacy and union, calling us to learn from him, and to allow him to shape and conform our hearts, our attitudes and our loving to his. Calling us, inviting us, every day, through our choices and our small and steadfast acts of fidelity, peace-making, hope-bringing, serving, loving... to be part of building that civilisation of love which is surely God's dream and desire for our world. This month especially, in the midst of our busyness and distractions, and in a world filled with conflict, destruction and anger, can we allow the Heart of Jesus to call each of us back, time and again, to what matters most?
